AVICENNA TECHNOLOGY TO PRESENT: “CUSTOMIZE POLYIMIDE WITH LASER ENERGY” AT MD&M MPLS ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, AT 2:00 P.M. IN BOOTH 145

Montevideo, Minn. / 05 October 2009—Avicenna Technology, an innovative manufacturer primarily serving the medical device industry with Laser, Mechanical, and Organizational Energy services, will address the MD&M Minneapolis show audience with its new presentation, “Customize Polyimide with Laser Energy.” The presentation will be held Thursday, October 22, at 2:00 p.m. in booth 145.

Laser Machining Polyimide

Laser machining, with its ability to remove material without contact, can successfully customize polyimide tubing where traditional thermal and mechanical approaches fail. Applying laser machining techniques to polyimide tubing accommodates precise specifications of medical device engineers when they require enhanced functionality of critical tubing components.

Unique Polyimide Strengths

Polyimide is a thermoset polymer made stronger by the introduction of heat in its curing process. Cured polyimide offers very strong mechanical and dielectric properties and provides superior stability when faced with chemical exposure and high temperatures. The thermoset nature of polyimide means that once cured, the material cannot be subsequently reflowed or melted. Such tubing offers medical device designers tight-tolerance components with superior column strength that transmit directional and torsional forces. Polyimide tubing can be further enhanced by customizing the component with expanded or reduced diameters, flared or tapered tips, cut holes or slots, and even marking or etching for identification.

Advantages of Laser Machining

Advantages to laser machining polyimide tubing include: allowing distinct customization of a tubing that is otherwise difficult to modify; providing a flexible and amendable tooling discipline that does not require expensive hard-tooling; and accommodating rapid prototyping, design feasibility, and proof-of-concept services for design engineers.
